|A South African Airways ground engineer has had to have his leg amputated after he was trapped under the wheels of a Boeing 747 on Sunday in a freak accident. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed as his family had not yet been informed of the incident, was attempting to place chocks on the wheels of the British Airways plane as it parked on the Delta apron at the Johannesburg International Airport on Sunday morning.
Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) spokesperson Bryan Thompson said the incident happened at about 7am as the flight from London taxied into the airport and parked. Passengers were kept waiting on board for almost an hour as paramedics helped the man, who was trapped under the wheels.
“His condition was serious and necessitated that he be airlifted to hospital,” Thompson said.
SAA spokesperson Jacqui O’Sullivan said the massive plane had taxied in to the parking spot and the ground engineer was preparing to “chock the aircraft”; which she described as putting into place equipment that “works like putting a brick behind the wheel of your car”.
She said the man was airlifted to Milpark Hospital and immediately underwent surgery. His right leg had to be amputated.

Investigation continues into SAA accident
Johannesburgh, June 26, ZANIS The ground Engineer who was injured while trying to wedge the wheels of a Boeing 747 at the Johannesburg International Airport yesterday has had his right foot amputated.
South African Airways (SAA) spokesperson Jacqui O’Sullivan told BuaNews that the man was airlifted to the Milpark hospital where his foot was amputated yesterday.
His condition has been described as stable.
Ms O’Sullivan said the cause of the incident was not yet confirmed but investigations were continuing.
The accident happened yesterday morning when the plane was being parked and the victim was about to “cock” the aircraft – positioning mechanisms on either side of the plane’s wheels to prevent it from moving – but he got trapped.
“We suspect he slipped but we cannot confirm what happened because investigations into the matter are still underway,” she said.
She said SAA was in constant contact with the man’s family and made sure they got to the hospital after notifying them of the incident. ZANIS/BUANEWS/ENDS
Man in waakeenheid ná vliegtuig oor hom ry en voet vaspen
25/06/2006 21:48 – (SA)
JOHANNESBURG.
